Program Summary
Ethical questions abound in our field. Does a particular fee structure represent a performance bonus—or a commission? What should I do when a donor includes a bequest in his or her will and I have concerns about the arrangement? Should I tell my executive director (or board chair) that her great new idea entails prohibited behavior under my professional association’s standards of practice?
These are important questions to understand and be able to address. But ethics is more than just answering questions correctly. Too often we look at ethics in a very limited fashion: “It’s a list of things we can and cannot do.” Or we wait to think proactively about ethics until it’s too late and a controversy has already arisen.
In an increasingly connected world where accountability, ethics and transparency are not just buzz words but fundamental aspects of a donor’s (and society’s) outlook, we must explore how organizations can use ethics to reach out to the public to generate support, and the role of fundraisers, board members and senior staff in creating an “ethical” organization.
The role of ethics in fundraising;
Creating a culture of ethics within your organization and speaking with donors and staff about ethics;
Hypothetical case studies to answer key ethical issues and highlight the thinking that goes into ethical considerations; and
Activities and procedures of the AFP Ethics Committee and how you can receive advice and guidance when an ethical matter arises
CFRE Accreditation Participation in this session qualifies for 3 points toward CFRE education requirements.
