Lots has happened in Ontario over the last few days including Ontario public schools cancelled for the next 3 weeks, many universities cancelling in-person classes, major sporting events cancelled, etc.   These preventative measures make a lot of sense in the current circumstances.

We are monitoring the situation.   With the spread of the coronavirus, our law firm has taken measures to protect our staff, clients and the broader community and to ensure continuity of the services we provide.    While our office will be open, we instructed all staff on March 12, 2020 to as much as possible work remotely.  All of our workforce can work remotely.

We will not be having in-person meetings unless necessary and if necessary a confidential screening process will be in place.  We have converted our Charity Boot Camp on April 20, 2020 into an online interactive program and offered anyone who wishes a full refund.

We are working hard to ensure that we can continue to provide the same high level of service to clients as they expect:

  • We are using conferencing and video conference software to facilitate communication and all meetings will be done electronically over the next few weeks.
  • We use online booking tools to easily allow clients to book calls and videoconferences.
  • We can receive client documents and large files through an internet portal.
  • We have portals such as CanadianCharityLaw.ca, www.CharityData.ca, and www.SmartGiving.ca with tens of thousands of pages of information on compliance and practical issues for Canadian charities and foreign charities operating in Canada as well as data on the charity sector.
  • We started transitioning over a year ago to having more online courses (as opposed to in-person programs) and we will be adding to the 8 available courses that we currently have.
  • For many years we have strived to do electronic filings where possible and now with the CRA CHAMP system online we can incorporate a non-profit and apply for charity status all online.  We can also do many other services online.

For some in the charitable sector, this is a time of deep anxiety with health care organizations potentially having to deal with a dramatic increase in workload, poverty relief organizations being strained by the increased need for their services and many organizations cancelling programs and fundraisers that bring in valuable revenue.

We will continue to be available to assist.  For some this will be a very busy time -for others, they may have more time to take stock.  We will be discounting some of our online courses in case people want to use the next few weeks to catch up on compliance issues.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to let us know.  We appreciate your understanding.
