This Blumbergs’ Snapshot of the Charity Sector in Nova Scotia 2018 provides a snapshot of the registered charity sector in Nova Scotia taken from a subset of the 2018 T3010 filings.
Some of the highlights of the Blumbergs’ Snapshot of the Nova Scotia Charity Sector 2018 include:
- 3601 Nova Scotia registered charities filed their T3010 out of approximately 85,800 charities in Canada
- $7.1 billion in total revenue for Nova Scotia charities and total expenditures of $6.9 billion.
- Government revenue totaled $4.9 billion including from the federal government ($254 million), provincial governments ($4.4 billion) and municipal/regional governments ($289 million). In total government is approximately 70% of the revenue of the whole charity sector in Nova Scotia.
- 3371 identified themselves as active and 115 as inactive
- 1222 made gifts to other charities or qualified donees during their 2018 fiscal year
- Nova Scotia charities spent over $41 million outside of Canada
- 2 Nova Scotia charities received funds from Global Affairs Canada
- 58 identified having contractual relationships with foreign intermediaries, 30 charities identified that employees conducted activities outside of Canada and 54 had volunteers conducting foreign activities.
- $15 million was received by Nova Scotia charities from outside of Canada
- 21 identified carrying on political activities
- $333,540 was spent by Nova Scotia charities on political activities
- 1871 identified having employment expenses while 1690 did not have any employment expenses
- $4.4 billion was spent by Nova Scotia charities on salaries and other compensation expenditures
- $292 million in official donation receipts were issued by Nova Scotia registered charities
