Join our panel of experts for a moderated tableside chat as they discuss several of the Canadian charitable sector’s fundamental dilemmas laid bare through the WE Charity scandal, as well as potential paths towards a healthier, more diverse, and vibrant sector. We’ll be discussing the importance of trust and public perception in the work we do, structural racism in our sector, the need for better understandings of the roles of race and privilege in defining sector leadership and working with the populations our organizations serve, the value of transparent governance and day-to-day operations, and leaning into advocacy and lobbying work done right in a time of limited organizational resources and high public scrutiny.

Mark Blumberg is a partner at the law firm Blumberg Segal LLP (Blumbergs) in Toronto, and works almost exclusively advising non-profits and registered charities on their work in Canada and abroad.

Mark has written numerous articles, is a frequent speaker on legal issues involving charity and not-for-profit law, and is the editor of www.CanadianCharityLaw.ca and www.globalphilanthropy.ca™ – Canadian websites dedicated to news about the Canadian charitable sector, as well as legal and ethical issues for Canadian charities operating in Canada or overseas. He also manages www.charitydata.ca, a large portal with data on the charity sector, and www.smartgiving.ca, a website encouraging donors to make informed philanthropic decisions.

Mark is particularly interested in the regulation of non-profits and charities in Canada, philanthropy, transparency requirements for the voluntary sector, providing accessible information on regulatory issues, and the use of data to make more informed decisions on the charity sector. He is quoted extensively in the media relating to charity and non-profit governance and regulation.

Hawa Y. Mire is a proven strategic senior leader, equity consultant, and community organizer with 12 years of non-profit experience focused on high-impact community development. In 2017, she completed a Master’s degree in Environmental Studies from York University, where her research examined community storytelling as a place of transformation. Hawa is a critical writer, commentator, and columnist with Ricochet Media, and has been featured with Maclean’sBriarpatch Magazine, CBC Radio’s Metro Morning, CBC Television, Citytv, and rabble.ca, among others.

With over 15 years in social services and community development, Jaya Mootoo utilizes her creativity, knowledge, and data analytics skills to create and implement effective customized fundraising and community engagement experiences for non-profits.

Jaya’s experience includes working with women, youth, and children who have experienced domestic violence, and volunteering with police services. She has created a successful, globally-recognized event called “Cram-A-Cruiser Food Drive and Fundraiser”, now being implemented by Peel Regional Police, Toronto Police Service, the Ontario Provincial Police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and numerous other police services across Canada and the U.S.

Jaya is dedicated to equity and inclusion in the fundraising sector and in society. She is an active member of AFP and CAGP, and is working diligently towards her CFRE designation. Jaya is a graduate of the Fundraising Management and Event Management programs at Humber College, and is the recipient of the 2019 Kevin Allen Scholarship for Excellence in Fundraising.

An award winning non-profit professional with expertise in fundraising and non-profit governance, Ann Rosenfield, MBA, CFRE has been interviewed on the ethics, operations, and governance of WE Charity by the CBC, Maclean’s, and The Canadian Press. She also published numerous editorials on WE in her role as Editor of Hilborn Charity eNews.

Ann has a strong understanding of the ethics, governance, financial, and legal regulatory requirements for running a charity. Her expertise is called on in her volunteer work with the Imagine Canada Standards Program for Canadian charities and non-profits.

Ann’s MBA focused on NonProfit Management, and she has completed the Institute for Corporate Directors NFP Governance Essentials Program. She also serves as an active volunteer for Endeavour Volunteer Consulting and the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Her own board work includes serving as Vice Chair of the Board for Rainbow Railroad.

Ann is the Principal of Charitably Speaking and a working fundraiser.
