Blumbergs will be holding a half-day seminar on November 10, 2015, Fundamentals of Bequests and Estate Litigation for Charities and Non-Profits from 1PM-4PM.

This seminar covers the tremendous revenue generation opportunities that bequests provide charities and the pitfalls with charities and non-profits not handling bequests appropriately or having to deal with difficult estates. The seminar will discuss ideas to avoid costly estate litigation.  This half-day program is designed to provide an over-view of bequests while avoiding legal and ethical issues.

The program will cover:

  • why are bequests important for organizations to understand;
  • how organizations can encourage bequests in a cost-effective manner;
  • legal issues with bequests;
  • ethical issues with bequests;
  • practical considerations in dealing with bequests;
  • major mistakes made by charities and non-profits in handling bequests;
  • understanding the court and probate process;
  • understanding the estate litigation process;
  • red flags in estates and how to deal with them;
  • executor compensation; and
  • probate taxes.

This program is designed to allow Charities and Not-For-Profits to understand the legal requirements and parameters of Estate law and to avoid some of the most common mistakes that can cost non-profits and charities significant resources.

Cost: $125.00 (includes light snacks, coffee, materials, and registration fees.  For those attending the morning session in addition to this afternoon session then lunch will be provided).

The program will be led by lawyers Scott Chambers and Mark Blumberg.

Fundamentals of Bequests and Estate Litigation for Charities and Non-Profits will be of interest to staff and volunteers at non-profits and charities responsible for fundraising, planned giving issues and governance, professional advisors such as lawyers and accountants who advise charities and non-profits, and board members of Canadian charities.
